Abstract

Abstract A radioactive source for use in intravascular treatment includes an elongated wire having a first diameter and an integral distal end having a second diameter. The second diameter is less than the first diameter. A plurality of spaced apart toroidal elements are disposed on the distal end of the wire. The toroidal elements include radioactive material.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 19
Claim 1
Independent Claim 82 words
A radioactive source for use in intravascular treatment, the radioactive source comprising: an elongated support wire having a first diameter and a distal portion having a second diameter, the second diameter being less than the first diameter; and a plurality of spaced-apart toroidal elements disposed on the distal portion, each toroidal element including radioactive material, wherein each of the toroidal elements is bar-bell shaped having a shaft portion and first and second enlarged end members on each end of the shaft portion.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 82 words
A radioactive source for use in intravascular treatment, the radioactive source comprising: an elongated support wire having a first diameter and a distal portion having a second diameter, the second diameter being less than the first diameter; and a plurality of spaced-apart toroidal elements disposed on the distal portion, each toroidal element including radioactive material, wherein each of the toroidal elements is bar-bell shaped having a shaft portion and first and second enlarged end members on each end of the shaft portion.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 21 words
The radioactive source of claim 1 , wherein the radioactive material is disposed on the shaft portion of each toroidal element.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 22 words
The radioactive source of claim 2 , wherein the radioactive material is only disposed on the shaft portion of each toroidal element.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 23 words
The radioactive source of claim 1 , wherein each of the toroidal elements are fixed in a stationary position on the distal portion.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 46 words
The radioactive source of claim 1 , wherein each toroidal element includes a bore extending through the first end member, the shaft portion and the second end member, wherein the distal portion extends into the bore allowing the toroidal element to slide upon the distal portion.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 23 words
The radioactive source of claim 5 , wherein each of the toroidal elements are fixed in a stationary position on the distal portion.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 44 words
The radioactive source of claim 1 , wherein the first and second enlarged end members are substantially identical and include an outwardly facing circumferential surface defined by a radius from a center axis, wherein the radius is constant along and about the center axis.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 48 words
The radioactive source of claim 1 , wherein the first and second enlarged end members are substantially identical and include an outwardly facing circumferential surface defined by a radius from a center axis, wherein the radius is constant about the center axis but varies along the center axis.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 17 words
The radioactive source of claim 1 , wherein the toroidal elements are integral with the distal portion.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 23 words
The radioactive source of claim 1 , wherein each of the toroidal elements are fixed in a stationary position on the distal portion.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 26 words
The radioactive source of claim 1 , wherein each of the toroidal elements includes a bore allowing the toroidal element to slide upon the distal portion.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 24 words
The radioactive source of claim 1 , wherein the elongated support wire includes an enlarged end on a remote end of the distal portion.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 20 words
The radioactive source of claim 12 , wherein the enlarged end has a diameter approximately equal to the first diameter.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim 18 words
The radioactive source of claim 1 , wherein each of the toroidal elements comprises a solid, compressed radioisotope.
Claim 16
Dependent Claim 21 words
The radioactive source of claim 14 , wherein each of the toroidal elements includes a gold plating disposed on the radioisotope.
Claim 17
Dependent Claim 23 words
The radioactive source of claim 1 , wherein each of the toroidal elements comprises a radioisotope layer on an outwardly facing major surface.
Claim 18
Dependent Claim 34 words
The radioactive source of claim 1 , wherein the elongated support wire includes a tapered transition portion from the elongated support wire of the first diameter to the second diameter of the distal portion.
Claim 19
Dependent Claim 60 words
The radioactive source of claim 17 , wherein the transition portion is formed with a conical surface disposed about a longitudinal axis of the elongated support wire, the conical surface defined by an angle of inclination with respect to a reference line perpendicular to the longitudinal axis in the range from greater than 0 degrees to less than 60 degrees.
