Abstract

Abstract Disclosed herein is an improved process for preparing color-plus-clear coatings, the improvement comprising high solids thermosetting coating compositions comprising hydroxy-functional polyepoxides and anhydrides as effective curing agents therefor. Films of these coating compositions are of remarkable appearance and are attended by remarkably low volatile organic content (VOC).

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 14
Claim 1
Independent Claim 139 words
An improved process of applying a composite coating to a substrate, said process comprising applying to the substrate a colored film-forming composition to form a base coat, and applying to said base coat a clear film-forming composition to form a transparent top coat over the base coat; followed by heating the composite coating to a temperature sufficient to provide effective cure; the improvement comprising the clear and/or base coat containing a high solids solvent-based thermosetting composition comprising: (a) a low number average molecular weight hydroxy-functional polyepoxide, (b) a curing agent consisting essentially of an anhydride, (c) a cure catalyst selected from the group consisting of an onium salt which is a quaternary ammonium salt or a phosphonium salt, and a tertiary amine; said composition is characterized in that it is curable in the absence of a melamine curing agent.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 139 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 18 words
The process of claim 1, wherein the hydroxy-functional polyepoxide has an epoxide equivalent weight of 50 to 1000.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 36 words
The process of claim 1, wherein the hydroxy-functional polyepoxide is selected from the group consisting of a glycidyl acrylic polymer, a glycidyl ether, a glycidyl ester, glycidyl isocyanate, epoxidized oils, cycloaliphatic epoxides and a mixture thereof.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 15 words
The process of claim 1, wherein the hydroxy-functional polyepoxide contains three or more epoxy groups.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 11 words
The process of claim 1, wherein the hydroxy-functional polyepoxide is aliphatic.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 17 words
The process of claim 1, wherein the hydroxy-functional polyepoxide has a hydroxy equivalent of 50 to 1000.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 17 words
The process of claim 1, wherein the anhydride curing agent is a polyacid anhydride comprising a monoanhydride.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 24 words
The process of claim 7, wherein the monoanhydride is an alkyl hexahydrophthalic anhydride wherein the alkyl group contains up to about seven carbon atoms.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 12 words
The process of claim 8, wherein the monoanhydride is methyl hexanhydrophthalic anhydride.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 18 words
The process of claim 1, wherein the cure catalyst is a tertiary amine or a quaternary ammonium salt.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 19 words
The process of claim 1, wherein the thermosetting composition has a solids content of about 45 to 85 percent.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 20 words
The process of claim 1, wherein the thermosetting composition has a VOC of about 3.6 pounds per gallon or less.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 13 words
