A method of preparing a pillared, interlayered clay product in which a tubular structured aluminosilicate forms the pillars between the layers of the clay, comprising the steps of contacting an aqueous slurry of a clay selected from the group consisting of smectites, vermiculite, fluorohectorite, hydromicas, fluorotetrasilicic mica, fluorophlogopite, and related swelling 2:1 layered silicate clays with an aqueous solution of a tubular structured aluminosilicate and recovering the pillared interlayered clay product.
