Abstract

Abstract A broad-range light-detection system. In some embodiments, the system includes apparatus and methods for detecting light with high accuracy over a broad range of intensities. In other embodiments, the system includes apparatus and methods for automatically scaling the detection range to improve detection based on the intensity of the detected light. In yet other embodiments, the system includes apparatus and methods for detecting light with increased speed, particularly in applications involving analysis of successive samples.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 8
Claim 1
Independent Claim 92 words
A device for detecting light, the device comprising: a detector configured to detect light and to generate an output representative of the detected light; an analog data collection device configured to compute the total amount of light detected based on a signal corresponding to the output of the detector; a discrete data collection device configured to compute the total amount of light detected based on a signal corresponding to the output of the detector; and a system controller configured to select between the analog and discrete devices based on a preselected criterion.
Claim 2
Independent Claim 92 words
A device for detecting light, the device comprising: a detector configured to detect light and to generate an output representative of the detected light; an analog data collection device configured to compute the total amount of light detected based on a signal corresponding to the output of the detector; a discrete data collection device configured to compute the total amount of light detected based on a signal corresponding to the output of the detector; and a system controller configured to select between the analog and discrete devices based on a preselected criterion.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 20 words
The device of claim 1 , further comprising at least two light sources, wherein the criterion is the light source.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 16 words
The device of claim 1 , wherein the criterion is the amount of the light detected.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 16 words
The device of claim 1 , wherein the criterion is the intensity of the light detected.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 24 words
The device of claim 4 , wherein the analog device is used to determine whether the amount of light has exceeded the threshold value.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 24 words
The device of claim 4 , wherein the discrete device is used to determine whether the amount of light has exceeded the threshold value.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 28 words
The device of claim 1 , wherein the amount of light automatically is determined using the analog processor if the amount of light detected exceeds a threshold value.
