Claim 1
Independent Claim
249 words
Apparatus for imaging diseases in tissue using autofluorescence, comprising: a light source for producing a beam of excitation light that causes the tissue under examination to produce characteristic autofluorescence light in a range of wavelengths whereby the intensity of the autofluorescence light for healthy tissue is substantially different than for diseased tissue and for producing a beam of illumination light to generate remittance light that comprises reflected and back-scattered illumination light from the tissue under examination; a fiber-optic endoscope for directing the excitation light and illumination light to the tissue under examination and for receiving autofluorescence light produced by the tissue and the remittance light from the tissue, wherein the autofluorescence light and the remittance light have an intensity that is proportional to the relative position of the fiber-optic endoscope and the tissue under examination; beam splitting means for separating the autofluorescence light and the remittance light into separate light beams; a first camera positioned to receive the beam of autofluorescence light; a second camera positioned to receive the beam of remittance light; and a color monitor having a pair of color inputs, whereby one color input is coupled to receive an output signal produced by the first camera and another color input is connected to receive an output signal produced by the second camera in order to simultaneously produce a pseudo-color image of the relative intensities of the autofluorescence light and the remittance light, wherein the pseudo-color image is indicative of whether the tissue under examination is diseased.

Claim 3
Dependent Claim
20 words
The system of claim 1, in which the excitation light is a blue light, having wavelengths between 400 nm-450 nm.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
19 words
The system of claim 1, wherein the illumination light is comprised of light having wavelengths greater than 700 nm.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
24 words
The system of claim 1, in which the illumination light and the excitation light both have wavelengths in the range of 400 nm-450 nm.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
57 words
The system of claim 1, in which the beam splitting means comprises a first dichroic mirror and a second dichroic mirror, wherein the first dichroic mirror diverts the remittance light to the first camera and passes the autofluorescence light to the second dichroic mirror, and the second dichroic mirror diverts the autofluorescence light to the second camera.
Claim 7
Independent Claim
196 words
A method of detecting diseased tissue, using autofluorescence light comprising the steps of: generating a beam of excitation light that causes the tissue under examination to produce characteristic autofluorescence light whereby the intensity of the autofluorescence light is substantially different for healthy tissue than for diseased tissue; generating a beam of illumination light; directing the beams of excitation and illumination light at the tissue under examination with a fiber-optic endoscope; gathering the autofluorescence light produced by the tissue under examination and the remittance light that comprises reflected and back-scattered illumination light, wherein the autofluorescence light and remittance light have an intensity that is proportional to the relative position of the fiber-optic endoscope and the tissue under examination; filtering the autofluorescence light from the remittance light and applying the autofluorescence light and the remittance light to a camera; and simultaneously applying output signals produced by the camera in response to the autofluorescence light and to the remittance light to separate color inputs of a color monitor in order to produce a pseudo-color image that displays the relative intensities of the autofluorescence light and the remittance light to indicate whether the tissue under examination is diseased or healthy.
