Abstract
Abstract An electronic turbocharger control system for an internal combustion engine is provided to control at least one turbocharger by controlling a bypass valve and a wastegate in response to the engine speed, engine load, ambient temperature, and the operating environment's barometric pressure wherein the turbocharger is controlled to operate within predetermined islands of efficiency on a pressure ratio versus mass airflow map thereby allowing the adaptation of one turbocharger assembly for various applications. The method and apparatus provides improved engine efficiency and increases low speed torque.

An electronic turbocharger control system for a stationary internal combustion engine fueled by a gaseous fuel, the electronic turbocharger control system comprising: a turbocharger for the engine which has a turbine and a compressor; an engine speed sensor that monitors engine speed and generates a signal in response thereto; an engine load sensor that monitors engine load and generates a signal in response thereto; an electronic controller that inputs the signals from the engine speed sensor and the engine load sensor and outputs a wastegate valve control signal and a bypass valve control signal; a wastegate valve connected between the engine and the turbocharger turbine for diverting engine exhaust away from the turbine in response to the wastegate valve control signal; and a bypass valve connected between an outlet for the turbocharger compressor and an inlet for the turbocharger turbine; wherein the position of the wastegate valve and the position of the bypass valve are adjusted to control air flow through the turbocharger compressor and to control a ratio of discharge pressure from the turbocharger compressor compared to inlet pressure of the turbocharger compressor; and wherein the electronic controller includes a memory programmed with sets of predetermined parameters which are used to generate the wastegate valve control signal and the bypass valve control signal in combination, each set being based upon barometric pressure.
