Abstract

Abstract A distributed amplifier has a plurality of amplifying sections which are connected between input and output lines comprising artificial transmission line sections. Input line attenuation compensation is provided by negative resistance compensation circuits which are connected to the input line. The compensation circuits provide negative resistance on the input line which substantially compensates for the attenuation that occurs along the input line, thereby substantially increasing the available gain and bandwidth of the distributed amplifier. Negative resistance output line attenuation compensation may also be provided, such as by utilizing a cascode amplifying circuit including a first common-source connected FET and a second common-gate connected FET, with the common-gate FET connected to the output line. The utilization of output line attenuation compensation provides further capacity for increasing the gain and bandwidth of the distributed amplifier.
