Abstract
Abstract Uniform adherent coatings of antimicrobial agents are applied to the surface of implants by applying a film of silicone oil to the surface of the implant and contacting the film-bearing surface with antimicrobial agents in a film-adherent form. A durable antimicrobial coating is formed. The coated implants can be packaged using mechanized implant handling equipment without significant loss of the antimicrobial coating. In a preferred embodiment a controlled-release implant for administering an anabolic agent is coated with a durable nonvulcanizing silicone fluid plus oxytetracycline hydrochloride coating which does not interfere with diffusion of the anabolic agent from the implant.
