Abstract

Abstract Process for preparing printing ink binders based on reaction products of (a) natural resins, (b) other synthetic resins, (c) α,β-olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acid units and (d) calcium compounds and, if appropriate, other compounds of metals of group II of the periodic system. The compounds (a) to (c) are reacted to give a product having an acid number of 75 to 150, which is then reacted with metal compounds in such a way that the acid number is reduced by at least one third. Unreacted metal compounds present in the resulting reaction product are then converted by means of acetic acid, via acetates, into salts of the resins. The resulting binders are used for preparing printing inks.

Total Claims: 10
Claim 1
Independent Claim 230 words
A process for preparing printing ink binders consisting essentially of of (a) a natural resin acid, (b) a hydrocarbon polymer which is derived from polymerizable hydrocarbons having isolated C 5 rings, (c) a α,β-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid unit, and (d), a metal compound selected from the groups consisting of at least one calcium compound and a combination thereof with a compound of at least one other metal of group II of the periodic system, which comprises reacting in a first step (A) component (a) with a component (b) having a bromine number of 80 to 200 and a component (c), the natural resin (a) and the sum of components (b) and (c) being in a weight ratio of 1:0.7 to 1, B) reacting the product obtained in a second step in in the melt with component (d) such that the meta content, relative to the total amount of components (a) to (c) is in the range of from 1.5 to 6% by weight and in such a way that the acid number is reduced by at least one third of its value with the provisio that at most 70% of the COOH-groups of the reaction product are converted into salts and (C) reacting the product obtained in a third step in the melt with acetic acid to convert the metal compounds not consumed, via acetates into salts of the resin.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 230 words
