Abstract

Abstract A clean air filter may be used to set an air filter change threshold value for an air filter monitor installed in an HVAC system. The air filter change threshold value may be used to determine a status of an air filter (e.g., clean or dirty).

Claim 1
Independent Claim 114 words
A method of setting an air filter change threshold value for an HVAC system, the HVAC system having a number of controllable HVAC components including a fan, wherein the fan, when activated, drives air through the air filter of the HVAC system, the method comprising: turning the fan of the HVAC system “on” to drive air through the air filter; with the fan “on”, obtaining a measure related to an amount of flow restriction presented by the air filter; determining an air filter change threshold value based, at least in part, on the measure related to the amount of flow restriction presented by the air filter; and storing the air filter change threshold value.

Claim 8
Dependent Claim 58 words
The method of claim 1 , further comprising: obtaining a measure related to an amount of flow restriction presented by a dirty air filter; notifying a user to change the dirty air filter when the measure related to an amount of flow restriction presented by the dirty air filter is greater than the air filter change threshold value.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 42 words
The method of claim 1 , wherein the measure related to the amount of flow restriction presented by the air filter corresponds to a differential pressure between a location upstream of the air filter to a location downstream of the air filter.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 28 words
The method of claim 1 , wherein the HVAC system is in a heating mode when the fan is turned “on” to drive air through the air filter.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 28 words
The method of claim 1 , wherein the HVAC system is in a cooling mode when the fan is turned “on” to drive air through the air filter.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 28 words
The method of claim 1 , wherein the HVAC system is in a ventilation mode when the fan is turned “on” to drive air through the air filter.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 15 words
The method of claim 1 , wherein the display is part of an HVAC controller.
Claim 14
