Abstract

Abstract Discrete anodes ( 7 ) and discrete emissive layers ( 15 ) are formed for respective pixels, while a hole-transport layer ( 14 ), an electron-transport layer ( 16 ), and a cathode ( 17 ) are formed to extend over a plurality of pixels. Accordingly, a process of etching-back the hole-transport layer ( 14 ) and the electron-transport layer ( 16 ) is eliminated. Also, since partitions ( 68 ) as conventionally provided are not necessary, the process of forming the partitions can also be eliminated. The anode ( 7 ) and the cathode ( 17 ) are separated by the hole-transport layer ( 14 ) and the electron-transport layer ( 16 ), and are therefore not subject to shorting, even though no partition ( 68 ) is employed. Further, since the emissive layer ( 15 ) is larger than the anode ( 7 ), a leak current generated at the ends of the anode and field concentration can be prevented.
