Abstract

Abstract Composites of high melting point thermoplastics such as polyphenylene sulfide or polyimide and high modulus fibers such as carbon, graphite, or boron can be bonded to rubber using a primer such as a metal primer. The composite desirably has a modulus of elasticity of at least 750,000 psi and can be used as a belt in a no-flat tire.

Total Claims: 5
Claim 1
Independent Claim 95 words
A pneumatic tire, comprising; a carcass, sidewalls, tire beads, and a tire tread, said tire having at least one high modulus puncture resistant composite belt having a modulus of elasticity of at least 750,000 psi thereby rendering said tire essentially flat free, said at least one high modulus puncture resistant composite belt comprising a thermoplastic binder having a melting point of at least 225° C. and a reinforcing fiber, the amount of said fiber being from about 40 parts to about 90 parts by weight for every 100 parts by weight of said thermoplastic binder.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 95 words
A pneumatic tire, comprising; a carcass, sidewalls, tire beads, and a tire tread, said tire having at least one high modulus puncture resistant composite belt having a modulus of elasticity of at least 750,000 psi thereby rendering said tire essentially flat free, said at least one high modulus puncture resistant composite belt comprising a thermoplastic binder having a melting point of at least 225° C. and a reinforcing fiber, the amount of said fiber being from about 40 parts to about 90 parts by weight for every 100 parts by weight of said thermoplastic binder.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 47 words
A pneumatic tire according to claim 1, wherein said binder is polyphenylene sulfide, polyimide, polyurethane, or polyurea, or combinations thereof, and wherein said fiber is a carbon fiber, a glass fiber, a boron fiber, a nylon fiber, a polyester fiber, or a graphite fiber, or combinations thereof.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 65 words
A pneumatic tire according to claim 2, wherein said melting point of said thermoplastic binder is at least 275° C., wherein said thermoplastic binder is said polyphenylene sulfide, said polyimide, or combinations thereof, and wherein said fiber is said carbon fiber, said graphite fiber, or combinations thereof, and wherein the amount of said fiber is from about 50 parts to about 85 parts by weight.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 28 words
A pneumatic tire according to claim 3, wherein said modulus of elasticity of said at least one high modulus puncture resistant composite belt is at least 1,000,000 psi.
