Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 17
Claim 1
Independent Claim 51 words
A polymer nanocomposite comprising a mica layered silicate and a fluoroelastomer, wherein the nanocomposite has a structure selected from the group consisting of an exfoliated structure and an intercalated structure wherein the fluoroelastomer is a copolymer or terpolymer consisting of monomers selected from the group consisting of vinylidenefluoride, hexafluoropropylene, and tetrafluoroethylene.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 51 words
A polymer nanocomposite comprising a mica layered silicate and a fluoroelastomer, wherein the nanocomposite has a structure selected from the group consisting of an exfoliated structure and an intercalated structure wherein the fluoroelastomer is a copolymer or terpolymer consisting of monomers selected from the group consisting of vinylidenefluoride, hexafluoropropylene, and tetrafluoroethylene.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 26 words
The nanocomposite of claim 1, wherein the nanocomposite has the exfoliated structure where the delaminated layers of the mica layered silicate are dispersed in the fluoroelastomer.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 24 words
The nanocomposite of claim 1, wherein the nanocomposite has the intercalated structure where the fluoroelastomer is inserted between the layers of the mica silicate.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 25 words
The nanocomposite of claim 1, wherein the mica layered silicate has an aspect ratio of length to thickness ranging from about 50 to about 1000.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 31 words
The nanocomposite of claim 1, wherein the mica layered silicate is present in an amount ranging from about 1% to about 50% by weight based on the weight of the nanocomposite.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 31 words
The nanocomposite of claim 1, wherein the mica layered silicate is present in an amount ranging from about 5% to about 20% by weight based on the weight of the nanocomposite.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 15 words
The nanocomposite of claim 1, wherein the mica layered silicate is montmorillonite, bentonite, or hectorite.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 23 words
The nanocomposite of claim 1, wherein the nanocomposite is prepared by mixing at an elevated temperature the fluoroelastomer and the mica layered silicate.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 13 words
The nanocomposite of claim 8, wherein the mixing is accompanied by shearing forces.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 12 words
The nanocomposite of claim 8, wherein the mixing is accomplished by milling.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 17 words
The nanocomposite of claim 8, wherein the elevated temperature and the mixing results in the intercalated structure.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 17 words
The nanocomposite of claim 11, wherein the elevated temperature ranges from about 110° to about 150° F.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 17 words
The nanocomposite of claim 11, wherein the elevated temperature ranges from about 120° to about 130° F.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim 17 words
The nanocomposite of claim 8, wherein the elevated temperature and the mixing results in the exfoliated structure.
Claim 16
Dependent Claim 14 words
The nanocomposite of claim 8, wherein the elevated temperature is above about 150° F.
Claim 17
Dependent Claim 17 words
The nanocomposite of claim 8, wherein the elevated temperature ranges from about 150° to about 200° F.
