Abstract

Abstract A method of forming a drum assembly for use as a rotatable endless surface onto which a toner image is formed. The drum assembly has a hollow drum with an opening at each end and a surface onto which the image is formed. A support flange, having an aperture in the center thereof, is cooled before being inserted into each end opening. The drum assembly also includes a shaft having a collar fixed in the vicinity of each end. After the shaft is positioned inside the drum, the collars are positioned to coincide with the flange apertures. Screws secure each collar to its respective flange. The screws can be adjusted to reduce the eccentricity of the drum.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 14
Claim 1
Independent Claim 122 words
A method of forming a drum assembly for use as a rotatable endless surface means onto which a toner image can be formed in an electrostatographic single-pass multiple station printer, said drum assembly comprising a hollow, cylindrical drum having a photoconductive surface layer and, at each end of said drum, a flange and a shaft having a collar fixed thereon which is sized to fit with clearance inside said flange and which is secured thereto by adjustable fixing screws, each of said flanges being over-sized with respect to the internal diameter of said drum, the method comprising: cooling each of said flanges, inserting the cooled flanges into said drum, and adjusting said fixing screws to minimize the eccentricity of said drum assembly.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 35 words
The method according to claim 1, wherein, after said flanges have been inserted in said drum, said assembly is mounted in bearings and rotated in said bearings to measure the eccentricity of said drum assembly.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 20 words
The method according to claim 2, wherein said drum assembly is subsequently fitted into said printer together with said bearings.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 16 words
The method according to claim 1, wherein said cooling is to a temperature of -20° C.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 21 words
The method according to claim 1, wherein said drum is at room temperature when each said cooled flange is inserted therein.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 17 words
The method according to claim 1, wherein, after said adjusting, said fixing screws are locked in position.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 19 words
The method according to claim 6, wherein said fixing screws are locked in position by means of thread sealant.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 113 words
A drum assembly for a printer comprising: a hollow drum having first and second axial openings and an outer surface onto which an image can be formed; first and second flanges inserted in said openings for supporting said drum, each said flange having an axial aperture in the center thereof, and each said flange being in radial compression; a shaft having a collar fixed in the vicinity of each end thereof, wherein the position of said collars coincides with said flange apertures when said shaft has been positioned within said drum; and means for securing said flanges to said corresponding collars, said securing means being adjustable for reducing the eccentricity of said drum.
Claim 10
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 23 words
The drum assembly of claim 8, wherein said securing means comprises two sets of three adjustable fixing screws which bear on said collars.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 19 words
The drum assembly of claim 9, wherein said three fixing screws are angularly displaced from one another by 120°.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 23 words
The drum assembly of claim 9, wherein said three fixing screws are adjusted for concentricity of said drum assembly and locked in place.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 11 words
The drum assembly of claim 8, wherein said drum comprises aluminum.
