Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 12
Claim 1
Independent Claim
137 words
A method for sensing multiple coatings associated with a substrate, wherein each of said coatings includes at least a first component and a second component, comprising the steps of: irradiating the coated substrate with radiation including wavelengths in at least first, second and third separate wavelength bands of the electromagnetic spectrum; and detecting the amount of radiation emerging from the substrate and coatings in the first, second and third bands, the first and third bands being selected such that the radiation in the first and third bands is approximately equally as sensitive to the amount of the substrate and is unequally sensitive to the amount of the first component, and the second and third bands being selected such that the radiation in the second and third bands is unequally sensitive to the amount of the second component.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
12 words
A method as in claim 1, wherein the radiation is infrared radiation.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
38 words
A method as in claim 1, wherein the first component is latex and the first band is centered around approximately 2.30 μm and the second component is clay and the second band is centered around approximately 2.21 μm.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
32 words
A method as in claim 1, further comprising the step of computing the amount of the first component from the detected amount of radiation in at least the first and third bands.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
32 words
A method as in claim 1, further comprising the step of computing the amount of the second component from the detected amount of radiation in at least the second and third bands.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
48 words
A method as in claim 1, further comprising the step of detecting the amount of radiation emerging from the substrate and coatings in a fourth band, the fourth band being selected such that the radiation in the fourth band is sensitive to the amount of an interfering component.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
26 words
A method as in claim 6, wherein the detected amount of radiation in the fourth band is used to compensate for changes in the interfering component.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
73 words
A method as in claim 1, further comprising the step of irradiating the coated substrate with radiation in a fifth separate wavelength band of the electromagnetic spectrum; and detecting the amount of radiation emerging from the substrate and the coatings in the fifth band, the third and fifth bands being selected such that the radiation in the third band is more sensitive than the fifth band to the amount of a third component.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
45 words
A method as in claim 8, wherein the fifth band is selected for radiation which is substantially equally or equally sensitive to the substrate, to the substrate coated with the first and third components, and to the substrate coated with the first and second components.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim
23 words
A method as in claim 8, wherein the third component is CaCO 3 and the third band is centered around approximately 2.09 μm.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim
32 words
A method as in claim 8, further comprising the step of computing the amount of the third component from the detected amount of radiation in at least the third and fifth band.
