Abstract

Abstract Abstract of the Disclosure Apparatus for measuring the moisture content of a moving web in which radiation from a source located at a point remote from the web is conveyed by a plurality of light pipes to a plurality of transmitting ports arranged across the surface of the web in a direction generally perpendicular to the direction of travel of the web. A plurality of receiving ports arranged in alignment with the transmitting ports collect radiation either reflected from or transmitted through the web. A second set of light pipes convey the collected radiation to a photodetector array located at a point remote from the web. The photodetector is monitored by a microprocessor control system which provides an indication of the moisture content of the web.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 10
Claim 1
Independent Claim 156 words
Apparatus for obtaining a profile measurement of a property of a moving web including in combination means for irradiating a plurality of regions of said web with light, a plurality of detectors respectively responsive to radiation emanating from said regions, light from said irradiating means traveling to said regions and then to said detectors along respective paths substantially coincident with one another along portions thereof, an optical filter interposed in said path portions, said filter being movable to a plurality of positions relative to said path portions and transmitting a different radiation spectrum along said path portions in each of said positions, means for periodically moving said filter successively to said positions, means for successively measuring the outputs of one of said detectors for said filter positions, and means operable upon a subsequent movement of said filter to said positions for controlling said measuring means so as to measure the outputs of another of said detectors.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 156 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 12 words
Apparatus as in Claim 1 in which said light is infrared light.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 24 words
Apparatus as in Claim 1 for obtaining a profile measurement of the moisture content of said web in which said light is infrared light.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 24 words
Apparatus as in Claim 1 for measuring the moisture content of said web in which said transmitted radiation spectra are differential interactive with water.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 126 words
Apparatus for obtaining a profile measurement of a property of a moving web including in combination a plurality of light emitters arranged in a linear array extending across said web on one side thereof, one of said emitters being outboard of said web and the remaining emitters being aligned with respective regions of said web, a corresponding plurality of light receptors arranged on the other side of said web at locations opposite said light emitters, one of said receptors being responsive to light from said one emitter and the remaining receptors being respectively responsive to light from said regions, means responsive to said remaining receptors for providing un-corrected measurements of said property in said regions, and means responsive to said one receptor for correcting said measurements.
Claim 7
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 12 words
Apparatus as in Claim 5 in which said light is infrared light.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 24 words
Apparatus as in Claim 5 for obtaining a profile measurement of the moisture content of said web in which said light is infrared light.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 22 words
Apparatus as in Claim 5 including a light source and means for directing light from said source to each of said emitters.
