In a telecommunication system in which a plurality of trunk lines each receive one byte per frame of an M megabits per second digital multiplexed signal from a local digital switch having N bytes of R bits plus T framing bits in each frame, wherein the local switch is coupled to a toll switch, wherein the Xth bit of each byte per frame has a first state or a second state and wherein when the switches lack frame alignment the Xth bit of each byte per frame is potentially converted to the second state by each switch performing signalling bit insertion in every Y frames, a method of restoring converted Xth bits comprising the steps of: a) storing a plurality of Xth bits of each byte per frame designated for said trunk line; b) comparing, for each stored Xth bit, the Xth bit two frames previous and with the Xth bit four frames previous; and c) restoring the Xth bit to the first state when at least one of said compared Xth bits is in the first state based on said comparison.
