Abstract

Abstract This invention concerns the production of oriented polymeric films in which a layer of an ambient temperature curable silicone resin composition is formed on a layer of a polymeric film which is thereafter stretched at an elevated temperature to effect orientation of the film. The silicone resin composition includes a volatile inhibitor for inhibiting curing of the composition while stretching is effected. Suitable inhibitors include alkanols when the silicone resin has hydroxyl functionality. Films so produced can be used as release films.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 19
Claim 1
Independent Claim 89 words
A process for the production of an oriented polymeric film which process comprises forming a layer of an ambient temperature curable silicone resin composition on a surface of a polymeric film, stretching the film at an elevated temperature to effect orientation of the film and winding the stretched film into a roll, wherein the silicone resin composition includes a volatile inhibitor for inhibiting curing of the composition while stretching is effected such that the majority of curing of the composition occurs after the film is wound into a roll.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 89 words
A process for the production of an oriented polymeric film which process comprises forming a layer of an ambient temperature curable silicone resin composition on a surface of a polymeric film, stretching the film at an elevated temperature to effect orientation of the film and winding the stretched film into a roll, wherein the silicone resin composition includes a volatile inhibitor for inhibiting curing of the composition while stretching is effected such that the majority of curing of the composition occurs after the film is wound into a roll.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 30 words
A process according to claim 1, wherein the volatile inhibitor is present in the composition in an amount sufficient to inhibit curing thereof until the said stretching is substantially complete.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 13 words
A process according to claim 1, wherein the volatile inhibitor comprises an alkanol.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 14 words
A process according to claim 3, wherein the volatile alkanol is ethanol or propan-2-ol.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 21 words
A process according to claim 3, wherein the silicone resin composition includes an organometallic catalyst for catalyzing curing of the composition.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 13 words
A process according to claim 5, wherein the catalyst is a tin-containing compound.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 23 words
A process according to claim 1, wherein the silicone of the composition comprises a dialkyl or alkyl aryl silicone fluid having hydroxyl functionality.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 17 words
A process according to claim 7, wherein the composition contains a tetra-silicate ester as a cross-linking agent.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 33 words
A process according to claim 1, wherein the film is stretched to effect orientation in one direction before the silicone resin composition is applied and the film is thereafter oriented in another direction.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 22 words
A process according to claim 1, wherein the film is subjected to a corona discharge treatment before the curable composition is applied.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 25 words
A process according to claim 1, wherein the film is heat set after the composition has been applied and the film has thereafter been oriented.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 13 words
A process according to claim 1, wherein the film is a polypropylene film.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 15 words
A process according to claim 1, wherein the polymeric film comprises two or more layers.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim 15 words
A process according to claim 1, wherein the polymeric film after stretching has voids therein.
Claim 16
Dependent Claim 19 words
A process according to claim 1, wherein the film is stretched by at least 4.5:1 in the machine direction.
Claim 17
Dependent Claim 19 words
A process according to claim 1, wherein the film produced has a thickness of from 20 to 100 microns.
Claim 18
Dependent Claim 18 words
A process according to claim 15, wherein the film is stretched 5.5 to 6.5:1 in the machine direction.
Claim 19
Dependent Claim 19 words
A process according to claim 16, wherein the film produced has a thickness of from 40 to 60 microns.
