Abstract

Abstract In a nuclear fuel rod identification system, a bar code etched directly on a surface of a nuclear fuel rod is read by first positioning the fuel rod such that its surface portion having the bar code etched directly thereon, such as by a laser, is disposed adjacent to a light diffuser surface and between such surface and a light reader. Next, a beam of laser light is directed on the bar code on fuel rod surface portion such that the light is reflected therefrom onto the light diffuser surface. Then, the light reflected from the bar code via the light diffuser surface is received and read by the light reader. The light diffuser surface is disposed at about thirty degrees relative to the path of the beam of light directed to the fuel surface portion such that only about twenty-five percent of the light is reflected by the diffuser surface back to the light reader.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 10
Claim 1
Independent Claim 171 words
In a nuclear fuel rod identification system, a method of reading a bar code etched directly on a surface of a nuclear fuel rod, comprising the steps of: (a) defining a pair of light diffuser surfaces adjacent one another but in oppositely inclined relation to a beam of light emitted from a light reader; (b) positioning a fuel rod, having a cylindrical surface portion with a bar code etched directly thereon, relative to the light diffuser surfaces such that the surfaces are disposed adjacent to and in oppositely inclined relation along opposite sides of the fuel rod surface portion and the fuel rod surface portion is aligned with the beam of light emitted from the light reader; (c) directing the beam of light on the bar code on fuel rod cylindrical surface portion such that the light is reflected therefrom onto one of the light diffuser surfaces; and (d) receiving and reading the reflected light from the bar code via the one of the light diffuser surfaces to the light reader.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 171 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 52 words
The reading method as recited in claim 1, wherein each light diffuser surface is disposed relative to the path of the beam of light directed to the fuel rod surface portion such that only about twenty-five percent of the light is reflected by the one diffuser surface back to the light reader.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 35 words
The reading method as recited in claim 1, wherein each light diffuser surface is disposed at about thirty degrees relative to the path of the beam of light directed to the fuel rod surface portion.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 20 words
The reading method as recited in claim 1, wherein the light beam generated by the light reader is laser light.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 191 words
In a nuclear fuel rod identification system, an apparatus for reading a bar code etched directly on a surface of a nuclear fuel rod, comprising: (a) means defining a pair of light diffuser surfaces adjacent one another but in oppositely inclined relation to a predetermined axis; (b) a light reader facing generally toward said light diffuser surfaces and operable for emitting a beam of light along said axis; and (c) means for positioning a fuel rod, having a cylindrical surface portion with a bar code etched directly thereon, relative to said light diffuser surfaces such that said surfaces are disposed adjacent to and in oppositely inclined relation along opposite sides of said fuel rod cylindrical surface portion and said fuel rod surface portion is aligned with the beam of light from said light reader; (d) said reader being operable to direct the beam of light on the bar code on fuel rod cylindrical surface portion such that the light is reflected therefrom onto one of the light diffuser surfaces; (e) said reader being further operable to receive and read light reflected from the bar code via said one light diffuser surface.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 191 words
