Abstract A compound of general formula ##STR1## in which X - represents one equivalent of an anion; R 5 represents a hydrogen atom or a methyl group; each R 4 independently represents a methyl or ethyl group; and each of R 1 , R 2 and R 3 independently represents a hydrogen or halogen atom, an alkyl, alkoxy or alkylthio group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, an arylthio group or a group of formula ##STR2## in which R 4 , R 5 and X have the meanings given above, are useful as water soluble co-polymerizable photoinitiators.
