Abstract

Abstract A photographic element comprising a support having thereon a gelatin-containing layer, and a matting agent comprising polymer particles covalently bonded to the gelatin in the layer. The polymer particles may be individually covered with gelatin that is covalently bonded thereto and the gelatin that is covalently bonded to the particles may be cross-linked with the gelatin in the layer. There is also provided a process of preparing a photographic element comprising a matting agent and a layer comprising gelatin. In this process, the gelatin layer is coated onto a support, at least partially dried, and polymer particles are applied to the layer. The polymer particles are then covalently bonded to the gelatin in the layer.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim 73 words
A photographic element comprising a support having thereon: a radiation-sensitive silver halide emulsion layer, an outermost layer comprising gelatin, which may be the same as or different from the silver halide layer, and an amount effective as a matting agent of polymer particles on top of the outer surface of the outermost gelatin layer covalently bonded to the gelatin of the outermost layer, either directly or with the aid of a crosslinking agent.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 73 words
A photographic element comprising a support having thereon: a radiation-sensitive silver halide emulsion layer, an outermost layer comprising gelatin, which may be the same as or different from the silver halide layer, and an amount effective as a matting agent of polymer particles on top of the outer surface of the outermost gelatin layer covalently bonded to the gelatin of the outermost layer, either directly or with the aid of a crosslinking agent.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 33 words
A photographic element according to claim 1 wherein said polymer particles are individually covered with gelatin that is covalently bonded thereto and which is also covalently bonded to the gelatin in said layer.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 46 words
A photographic element according to claim 1 wherein the polymer in said particles comprises an active halogen atom, an isocyanate group, an epoxide group, an aldehyde group, a chloroethylsulfone group, a vinyl sulfone group, an amine group, a carboxylic acid group, or an active methylene group.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 64 words
A photographic element according to claim 3 wherein said polymer particles comprise from 0.1 to 100 mole percent of a copolymer comprising an active chlorine atom, an isocyanate group, an expoxy group, an active halogen atom, an isocyanate group, an epoxide group, an aldehyde group, a chloroethylsulfone group, a vinyl sulfone group, an amine group, a carboxylic acid group, or an active methylene group.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 59 words
A photographic element according to claim 1 wherein the polymer particles comprise repeating units of the formula: --A--.sub.x B.sub.100-x' wherein A represents recurring units derived from one or more monomers that are capable of covalently bonding with gelatin, B represents recurring units derived from one or more other ethylenically unsaturated monomrs, and x represents 0.1 to 100 mole percent.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 42 words
A photographic element according to claim 5 wherein A comprises an active halogen atom, an isocyanate group, an epoxide group, an aldehyde group, a chloroethylsulfone group, a vinyl sulfone group, an amine group, a carboxylic acid group, or an active methylene group.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 20 words
A photographic element according to claim 1 wherein the polymer particles have a mean diameter of 1 to 15 microns.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 14 words
A photographic element according to claim 7 wherein the polymer particles are spherical beads.
