Abstract

Abstract The invention relates to a catalyst composition for polymerization of norbornene-type monomer: including WCl 4 O and WCl 6 in a molar ratio of WCl 4 O to WCl 6 from 1:9 to 1:1 (i.e., 10-50% WOCl 4 and 90-50% WCl 6 ). The method of making catalyst includes: providing catalyst precursor material, the major portion of which is WCl 6 , and contacting controlled proportions of the oxygen donor and WCl 6 to form WCl 4 O in a molar ratio to WCl 6 of between 1:9 and 1:1.
