Abstract

Abstract Methods are described for using organic copper complexes or their solvates, which exhibit superoxide dismutase activity and act as superoxide radical scavengers, as radioprotectants to protect mammalian cells from damage caused by gamma- or x-irradiation. Treatment can result in the protection of normal tissues in cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy and in the protection of individuals who may be at risk with regard to hazardous effects of exposure to occupational or environmental ionizing radiation.
