Abstract
Abstract Image display including a viewing screen comprising spaced elemental image areas and a light-absorbing matrix of crystalline zinc-iron sulfide particles adjacent to these areas. The display may be made by producing a layer which is tacky in substantially the pattern of the desired matrix, and then contacting crystalline zinc-iron sulfide particles with the tacky pattern, whereby particles adhere to the tacky pattern, thereby producing the desired matrix.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 8
Claim 1
Independent Claim
75 words
A method for making a viewing screen that includes a light-absorbing matrix adjacent spaced elemental image areas, said method comprising: (a) producing on a major surface of a viewing window a layer which is tacky in substantially the pattern of said matrix, and (b) contacting powder of light-absorbing material on said layer whereby particles of said powder adhere to said layer, said powder consisting essentially of crystalline zinc-iron sulfide particles, and thereby producing said matrix.
Claim 2
Independent Claim
75 words
A method for making a viewing screen that includes a light-absorbing matrix adjacent spaced elemental image areas, said method comprising: (a) producing on a major surface of a viewing window a layer which is tacky in substantially the pattern of said matrix, and (b) contacting powder of light-absorbing material on said layer whereby particles of said powder adhere to said layer, said powder consisting essentially of crystalline zinc-iron sulfide particles, and thereby producing said matrix.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
23 words
The method defined in claim 1 wherein said zinc-iron sulfide has a molar composition: Zn 1-x Fe x S wherein x=0.1 to 0.9.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
22 words
The method defined in claim 2 wherein said zinc-iron sulfide has the approximate molar composition: Zn 0 .5 Fe 0 .5 S.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
55 words
The method defined in claim 1 wherein said tacky pattern is produced by the steps including: (i) coating said major surface with a nontacky layer of a phototackifiable material and then (ii) exposing said layer to actinic light in substantially the pattern of said matrix for a time period sufficient to develop the required tackiness.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
44 words
The method defined in claim 4 including depositing particles of inorganic cathodoluminescent material in said elemental areas wherein said surface is made tacky in the pattern of said elemental image areas and powders of said inorganic cathodoluminescent materials are contacted on said image areas.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
42 words
The method defined in claim 5 wherein three different cathodoluminescent materials are deposited in said elemental areas by repeating said method defined in claim 4 three times in such manner as to produce ordered arrays of areas of said three different materials.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
39 words
The method defined in claim 6 wherein said three different cathodoluminescent materials are a red-emitting material, a green-emitting material and a blue-emitting material, at least two of said materials having surface characteristics similar to those of pure zinc sulfide.
