Abstract

Abstract Crosslinking compositions comprising (a) reaction product, optionally at least partially neutralized of certain di- or poly epoxy and hydroxy amines and (b) amino resin crosslinkers cure into alkaline resistant coatings that protect against corrosion even in absence of inhibiting pigments such as chromates. The crosslinking compositions may be formulated into a variety of primers including solvent and water base primers that cure within conventional schedules.

Claim 1
Independent Claim 56 words
A solvent based primer composition that retards corrosion in substantial absence of chromate corrosion inhibiting pigments which comprises an intimate admixture of film forming ingredients consisting essentially of: (A) A substantially gel free epoxy and amine reaction product which contains no ester linkages and which is made by reacting in non-aqueous medium reactants consisting essentially of:
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 56 words
A solvent based primer composition that retards corrosion in substantial absence of chromate corrosion inhibiting pigments which comprises an intimate admixture of film forming ingredients consisting essentially of: (A) A substantially gel free epoxy and amine reaction product which contains no ester linkages and which is made by reacting in non-aqueous medium reactants consisting essentially of:
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 134 words
An epoxy resin reactant having two 1,2-epoxy groups per molecule which is the reaction product of bisphenol A and epichlorohydrin and has an epoxide equivalent weight range from at least about 875 to 4,000; and 2. An amine reactant selected from the group consisting of secondary monoamines having a total of up to about 20 carbons, and comprising at least about 75 mole percent hydroxy amine containing one or more hydroxy groups removed at least one carbon from the amino nitrogen in a stoichiometric amount such that the reaction product (A) comprises tertiary amino and primary and secondary hydroxy groups and is substantially free of unreacted epoxy groups; (B) a di- or polyhydroxy compound; and (C) An amine aldehyde resin crosslinking agent at about 5-30% by weight of the combined weight (A) and (B).
Claim 4
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 14 words
The composition in accordance with claim 1, wherein (B) is present and comprises glycol.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 24 words
The composition in accordance with claim 1, wherein the secondary amine comprises a di-loweralkanol amine having a total of up to about 7 carbons.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 15 words
The primer in accordance with claim 1, wherein the amine reactant is a dialkanol amine.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 23 words
The composition in accordance with claim 1 or 4, wherein the amino resin crosslinking agent comprises alkylated melamine or urea resin or both.
