Abstract
Abstract Disclosed are 2-, 5- and 6-substituted-1-carbadethiapen-2-em-3-carboxylic acids having the structure: <IMAGE> I wherein R6, R7, R8 and R9 are, inter alia, independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, (R9 is not hydrogen), alkyl, alkenyl, aryl and aralkyl. Such compounds, as well as their pharmaceutically acceptable salt, ester and amide derivatives, are useful as antibiotics. Also disclosed are processes for the preparation of such compounds and methods of treatment comprising administering such compounds and compositions when an antibiotic effect is indicated.

A compound having the structure: ##STR270## and the pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof; wherein R 6 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and loweralkyl; R 7 is selected from the group consisting of: hydroxyloweralkyl which may be substituted with cycloloweralkyl, phenyl, trifluoromethyl, dioxolane, carboxyl, methyltetrazole and aminomethylphenyl and aminoloweralkyl; R 8 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, loweralkyl which may be substituted with amino, formamidino, acetamidino, guanidino, loweralkanoyl, hydroxy, halo and morpholane, phenyl which may be substituted with aminomethyl, formamidinomethyl and acetamidinomethyl, methylthiadiazole, methyltetrazole, pyridine, aminomethylthiadiazole and aminomethyltetrazole; and R 9 is selected from the group consisting of loweralkyl, cycloloweralkyl, cycloloweralkylloweralkyl, phenyl, halophenyl, loweralkoxyphenyl and trifluoromethyl; and wherein R 7 is not 1-hydroxyethyl when R 6 is hydrogen and R 8 is 2-aminoethyl.
