Abstract

Abstract A method for electrolytically etching metals. Nickel superalloys are etched with uniform grooves using a 10 volume percent HCl aqueous solution and periodically reversed current. An aperture containing shield is interposed between an upward facing workpiece and an electrode. The shield is adapted to divert gases evolved at the workpiece from passage to electrode. Controlled roughness in an etched surface is produced by varying electrolyte temperature. Preferred smooth finish is obtained at 7° C.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 4
Claim 1
Independent Claim 133 words
The method of electrolytically etching depressions in a metal workpiece using an electrode and electrolyte, comprising: (a) applying to the workpiece a resist configured to define an area to be etched; (b) immersing the electrode and workpiece in an electrolyte; (c) providing a shield interposed between the workpiece and the electrode, the shield containing an aperture substantially smaller than the area of the workpiece, being shaped to prevent passage toward the electrode of gases liberated from the workpiece excepting those which might pass through the aperture, being further adapted and located to allow circulation of electrolyte through the aperture and about the electrode during electrolytic etching; (d) applying an alternating electrical potential between the workpiece and the electrode and maintaining the application of alternating potential until depressions of the desired depth are achieved.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 37 words
The method of claim 1 wherein the workpiece is a nickel superalloy, the electrolyte is a 8 to 12 volume percent HCl aqueous solution and the temperature of the electrolyte is maintained between 5° and 20° C.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 46 words
The methods of claims 1 or 2 further comprising controlling the roughness of the surface of the workpiece by varying the electrolyte temperature directly with the roughness of the surface desired, to produce a rougher surface through increased temperature and a smoother surface through decreased temperature.
