A dental cream or gel comprising a carrier material, dextranase having an activity of about 20 to 400 units/mg. protein in amount of about 0.001 to about 5% by weight and a non-toxic compound which provides an effective amount of at least 0.001 percent of stabilizer/activator calcium metal ions, said metal ions being provided from water-soluble salts selected from the group consisting of chlorides and nitrates, namely calcium chloride and calcium nitrate, said metal ions being effective to stabilize said dextranase and activate its dextranase activity.
