Abstract

Abstract Solid titanium trichloride in the form of fine granules having low aluminum compound content, which is suitable as a catalyst for polymerization of alpha -olefins, especially, propylene is obtained as a precipitate by heating liquefied titanium trichloride in the presence of a liberating agent, and separating the thus formed precipitate. The liquified titanium trichloride is preferably prepared with an reducing titanium tetrachloride by organic aluminum compound in the presence of ether and hydrocarbon.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 8
Claim 1
Independent Claim 186 words
A process for the production of solid purple titanium trichloride suitable for use as a catalyst for polymerization of an α-olefin, which comprises: forming a homogeneous solution or mixture comprising titanium trichloride by treating titanium tetrachloride with an organoaluminum compound represented by the generic formula, AlR 3 n X 3-n , wherein R 3 denotes a hydrocarbon radical of 1 to 20 carbon atoms, n is a number of the value of 1 to 3 and X a halogen atom, in the presence of an ether and a hydrocarbon solvent selected from the group consisting of alicyclic and aromatic hydrocarbon solvents; said ether having the generic formula, R 1 --O--R 2 , wherein R 1 and R 2 are individually an alkyl or alkenyl group and at least one of R 1 and R 2 is an alkyl or alkenyl group having five or less carbon atoms; heating the thus obtained homogeneous solution or mixture in the presence of a Lewis acid at a temperature in the range of 20°-150° C to cause precipitation of a finely granulated purple solid titanium trichloride; and separating the precipitate.
