Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 10
Claim 1
Independent Claim 81 words
A process for preparing an improved thickening agent which comprises dispersing a heteropolysaccharide produced by the action of bacteria of the genus Xanthomonas on a carbohydrate in an aqueous reaction medium substantially free of polyvalent cations, increasing the pH of said reaction medium by the addition of NaOH, KOH, or NH 3 to above about 11, heating said reaction medium to a temperature above 150°F and maintaining the medium at this elevated temperature for a period of time to effect clarification.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 81 words
A process for preparing an improved thickening agent which comprises dispersing a heteropolysaccharide produced by the action of bacteria of the genus Xanthomonas on a carbohydrate in an aqueous reaction medium substantially free of polyvalent cations, increasing the pH of said reaction medium by the addition of NaOH, KOH, or NH 3 to above about 11, heating said reaction medium to a temperature above 150°F and maintaining the medium at this elevated temperature for a period of time to effect clarification.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 14 words
A process as defined in claim 1 wherein said alkaline compound is sodium hydroxide.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 28 words
A process as defined claim 1 wherein the reaction medium is maintained at a temperature between 180° and 230°F for the period of time required to effect clarification.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 16 words
A process as defined in claim 1 wherein said bacteria are of the species Xanthomonas campestris.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 24 words
A process as defined in claim 1 wherein the resulting clarified reaction mixture is diluted and circulated in contact with a subsurface geologic formation.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 18 words
A process as defined in claim 1 wherein the reaction medium is heated by direct contact with steam.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 82 words
A process for synthesizing an improved thickening agent consisting of reacting at an elevated temperature between 150° and 250°F a heteropolysaccharide produced by bacteria of the genus Xanthomonas in an aqueous reaction medium substantially free of polyvalent cations and having a pH above about 11, said elevated pH being obtained by the addition of sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide or ammonia, and recovering said thickening agent, distinguishable from the original heteropolysaccharide by its IR spectra, from the reaction medium by precipitation with alcohol.
Claim 9
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 17 words
A process as described in claim 7 wherein precipitation is accomplished by the addition of isopropyl alcohol.
