Abstract

Abstract A PN junction semiconductor device degradable by the application of excess voltages and voltage transients is provided integral built-in protection against such degradation by constituting what is normally the insulative portion of the housing for such device of a body of metal oxide varistor material, such varistor body housing element serving as a relatively low resistance dynamic shunt for excess voltages and voltage transients and thereby stabilizing both the dynamic and DC peak inverse voltage characteristic, as well as other electrical characteristics, of the protected device.
