Abstract

Abstract An analog voltage-to-digital converter employing a phase-locked loop. An input voltage to be converted is applied to a voltage controlled oscillator through an input impedance. The output of the first voltage controlled oscillator is divided in a first counter to provide a square wave input to one input of a phase detector. A second counter divides a reference frequency to provide a second square wave signal to a second input of the phase detector. The phase detector output is negatively fed back to the input of the first voltage controlled oscillator through a feedback impedance. The phase detector output is a signal whose pulse width is a function of the unknown input voltage. The phase detector output is used to gate a counter which counts a reference frequency to provide a digital number that is a function of the unknown voltage.
