Abstract

Abstract There is provided a packet-rate control method for a packet network (1l - 1n, 2l - 2nl), in which a declaration of parameters indicating the rate of fixed-length packets is so made to a call control system (5) by a subscriber terminal device prior to communication as to be associated with a logical channel number (LC). The rate of packets inputted to the network is so measured (101) as to be associated with a logical channel number. While the degree of violation is low, packets transmitted in violation of user-declaring parameters are provided (103) with a violation mark and taken in the network. If the degree of violation is high, the packets transmitted in violation of user-declaring parameters are discarded (104, 107) on the input side of the network. When there appears a possibility of congestion in the network, the marked packets are discarded (113). As a result, it is possible to prevent violation packets and marked packets from affecting the quality of service using normal packets.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 8
Claim 1
Independent Claim 182 words
A packet-rate control method for a packet communication network (1l - 1n, 2l - 2n), in which a declaration of parameters indicating the rate of transmitted packets is so made to a call control system (5) by a subscriber terminal device prior to communication as to be associated with a logical channel number (LC), said packet-rate control method comprising the steps of: monitoring (101), in association with a logic channel number, the rate of packets which have arrived at said call control system and, upon an excess of said packet rate over a first threshold value (VT1) determined on the basis of user-declaring parameters (T, X), adding (103) a predetermined mark to arrival packets and taking said arrival packets into the network; discarding (104, 107) arrival packets if the rate of packets which have arrived at said call control system exceeds a second threshold value (VT2), said second threshold value being higher than said first threshold value (VT1); and adjusting (113) the rate of packets in the network by discarding packets provided with said mark, when congestion has occurred in said netwok.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 58 words
A packet-rate control method according to Claim 1, comprising the step of transmitting a signal for notifying disorder occurrence from said call control system to a subscriber terminal device, which have transmitted arrival packets, when the discard rate of said arrival packets discarded due to the excess of said second threshold value exceeds a third threshold value (VT3).
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 166 words
A packet-rate control method for a packet communication network (1l - 1n, 2l - 2n), in which a declaration of parameters indicating the rate of fixed-length packets is so made to a call control system by a subscriber terminal device prior to communication as to be associated with a logical channel number (LC), said packet-rate control method comprising the steps of: monitoring (101), in association with a logic channel number, the arrival rate of packets and judging (102) the degree of violation of the user-declaring parameters (T, X); adding (103) a mark indicating violation to packets and receiving said packets provided with said mark in the network when said degree of violation of user-declaring parameters is lower than a predetermined reference value (VT2); and discarding (107) at least part of packets arriving thereafter from a terminal which has violated user-declaring parameters on the input side of the packet network if said degree of violation of the user-declaring parameters is higher than said predetermined reference value (VT2).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 64 words
A packet-rate control method according to Claim 3, further comprising the steps of: monitoring (105) the violation frequency of user-declaring parameters in association with a logic channel number; and upon an excess of said monitored violation frequency of user-declaring parameters over a predetermined reference value (VT3), discarding (106, 108) all packets arriving thereafter from the terminal on the input side of the packet network.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 38 words
A packet-rate control method according to Claim 4, further comprising the step of notifying the terminal violating the user-declaring parameters of disorder occurrence when said monitored violation frequency of user-declaring parameters has exceeded a predetermined reference value (VT3).
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 125 words
A packet-rate control apparatus for packet network, comprising: means (201) for storing, in association with a logic channel number (LC), user-declaring parameters (T, X) indicating the rate of transmitted packets declared to the network by a subscriber terminal device prior to communication with another device; means (101, 102) for monitoring the rate of arrival packets in association with a logic channel number and detecting packets arriving with a rate exceeding said user-declaring parameters; means (103) for adding a predetermined identification mark to packets which have arrived with a rate exceeding said user-declaring parameters; and means (107) for discarding packets which have arrived with a rate exceeding a predetermined threshold value (VT2), said predetermined threshold value being larger than the rate indicated by said user-declaring parameters.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 58 words
A packet-rate control apparatus according to Claim 6, further comprising: means (104) for detecting a disorder of a subscriber terminal device on the basis of a monitored value (S1) of the rate of arrival packets and said user-declaring parameters; and means (108) for discarding packets arriving thereafter from the subscriber terminal device wherefrom the disorder has been detected.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 53 words
A packet-rate control apparatus according to Claim 7, further comprising: means (105) for monitoring the detected disorder frequency of a subscriber terminal device; and means (106) for generating a signal (S5) notifying a disorder in the subscriber terminal device, on the basis of the result of said monitoring of the detected disorder frequency.
