Abstract

Abstract A highly adsorbent edible pregelatinised starch product is prepared by extruding a starch composition in the presence of a minor amount of water at temperatures of at least 150°C enabling gas-forming additives to be dispensed with. The products have low bulk density and are highly adsorbent, enabling mixtures with liquid products such as lipids to be obtained in powdered form.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim 60 words
Process for the preparation of highly adsorbent carrier material by extrusion of a farinaceous vegetable starch-containing composition under pressure at elevated temperatures sufficient to gelatinise the starch in the presence of a minor amount of added water, characterised by the fact that the temperature of the material during extrusion is maintained to at least 150°C and crushing the extruded product.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 60 words
Process for the preparation of highly adsorbent carrier material by extrusion of a farinaceous vegetable starch-containing composition under pressure at elevated temperatures sufficient to gelatinise the starch in the presence of a minor amount of added water, characterised by the fact that the temperature of the material during extrusion is maintained to at least 150°C and crushing the extruded product.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 16 words
Process according to claim 1 wherein the temperature is maintained within the range 150 to 200°C.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 19 words
Process according to claim 1 or 2 wherein the extrusion is carried out in the absence of gas-forming additives.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 26 words
Process according to claim 1 or 2 wherein from 0.1 to 1% by weight of a gassing agent is added by weight of the extrusion mixture.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 12 words
Process according to claim 4 wherein the gassing agent is ammonium bicarbonate.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 18 words
Process according to any of the preceding claims wherein the amount of added water is less than 10%.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 21 words
Process according to any of the preceding claims wherein the extrusion is effected at a pressure from 10 to 100 bars.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 43 words
A powdered culinary composition comprising an extruded pregelatinised starch composition as described in claim 1 having a bulk density of 20 to 100 grames per litre on which from 20 to 80% of an edible lipid by weight of the composition is adsorbed.
