Abstract

Abstract A protective wrapping for application to an elongate article such as a pipe (10) comprising a substrate (14) and a membrane (15) of a self-adhesive compound to contact and adhere to the pipe, the wrapping being locatable around the pipe so that it is locked and prevented against longitudinal shrinkage, the substrate being a plastic sheet material which has been longitudinally extended such that when applied and locked it will at ambient temperature tend to contract to form a tightly applied protection around the pipe.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 15
Claim 1
Independent Claim 90 words
A protective wrapping for application to an elongate article such as a pipe comprising a substrate (14) and a membrane (15) of a self-adhesive compound to contact and adhere to the pipe, the wrapping being locatable around the pipe so that it is locked and prevented against longitudinal shrinkage, the substrate (14) being a plastic sheet material, characterised in that the substrate (14) has been longitudinally extended such that when applied and locked it will at ambient temperature tend to contract to form a tightly applied protection around the pipe.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 90 words
A protective wrapping for application to an elongate article such as a pipe comprising a substrate (14) and a membrane (15) of a self-adhesive compound to contact and adhere to the pipe, the wrapping being locatable around the pipe so that it is locked and prevented against longitudinal shrinkage, the substrate (14) being a plastic sheet material, characterised in that the substrate (14) has been longitudinally extended such that when applied and locked it will at ambient temperature tend to contract to form a tightly applied protection around the pipe.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 58 words
A protective wrapping according to claim 1 characterised in that the membrane (15) extends throughout the length of the substrate (14) except at or near the leading edge thereof where the substrate is free to be directly bonded to the substrate of a previously applied length of wrapping or an earlier turn of the same length of wrapping.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 54 words
A protective wrapping according to claim 1 characterised in that the membrane (15) extends throughout the length of the substrate (14) except at or near the trailing end (17), and optionally the leading end, thereof whereby the substrate is free to be directly bonded to the substrate of an underlying lap of the wrapping.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 36 words
A protective wrapping according to claim 1 together with a separate patch (30) of substrate material by which the last applied end of the wrapping can be secured to a previously applied part of the substrate.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 22 words
A protective wrapping according to claim 1, 2 3 or 4 characterised in that the substrate is extended from 10 to 40%.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 18 words
A protective wrapping according to Claim 5 characterised in that the substrate is extended 15 to 30 %.
Claim 8
Independent Claim 83 words
A method of applying a wrapping, comprising a substrate of plastic sheet material and a membrane of a self-adhesive compound onto an elongate article such as a pipeline by tightly applying the wrapping to the article and locking the wrapping, such that it is unable longitudinally to shorten characterised in that at least the substrate of the wrapping is extended prior to application and in that the plastic is allowed to contract and thus tighten the wrapping upon the article under ambient conditions.
Claim 9
Independent Claim 83 words
A method of applying a wrapping, comprising a substrate of plastic sheet material and a membrane of a self-adhesive compound onto an elongate article such as a pipeline by tightly applying the wrapping to the article and locking the wrapping, such that it is unable longitudinally to shorten characterised in that at least the substrate of the wrapping is extended prior to application and in that the plastic is allowed to contract and thus tighten the wrapping upon the article under ambient conditions.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 34 words
A method according to Claim 7 characterised in that the substrate of the initially applied part of each length of wrapping is directly bonded to the substrate of a previously applied length of wrapping.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 58 words
A method according to Claim 8 characterised in that the last applied end of one length of the wrapping is directly bonded to part of the substrate of a previously length of the wrapping or the same length which it overlies by means of a patch of the substrate material being bonded to said end and said part.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 38 words
A method according to Claim 7 characteised in that the substrate of the last applied part of the wrapping is directly bonded to the substrate of a previously applied part of that or an earlier length of wrapping.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 32 words
A method according to Claim 10 characterised in that the wrapping is wound spirally upon itself so that each turn, or part turn, after the first lies directly upon a preceding turn.
Claim 14
Independent Claim 32 words
A method according to any one of claims 8 to 11 characterised in that the bonding is heat bonding, by high frequency welding, by means of an adhesive, or by ultrasonic welding.
Claim 15
Independent Claim 34 words
A method according to any one of claims 8 to 11 characterised in that the bonding is by solvent welding, and in that the solvent is preferably applied by an aerosol or compressible tube.
