Abstract

Abstract In a method of applying a wrapping comprising a substrate and a membrane of a self-adhesive compound on an elongate article such as a pipeline successive lengths of wrapping are applied around the article in helical manner under tension. The substrate of the initially applied part of each length of wrapping is directly bonded to the substrate of the last applied part of the preceding length of wrapping, without the interposition of any adhesive membrane so that tension in the substrates can be maintained through the wrapping. Arrangements wherein trailing edges of lengths of wrapping are adhesive free are also disclosed and their application discussed.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 19
Claim 1
Independent Claim 71 words
A method of applying a wrapping comprising a substrate and a membrane of a self-adhesive compound onto an elongate article such as a pipeline by applying successive lengths of the wrapping around the article in helical manner under tension, characterised in that the substrate of the initially applied part of each length of wrapping is directly bonded to the substrate of the last applied part of the preceding length of wrapping.
Claim 2
Independent Claim 71 words
A method of applying a wrapping comprising a substrate and a membrane of a self-adhesive compound onto an elongate article such as a pipeline by applying successive lengths of the wrapping around the article in helical manner under tension, characterised in that the substrate of the initially applied part of each length of wrapping is directly bonded to the substrate of the last applied part of the preceding length of wrapping.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 44 words
A method according to claim 1 characterised in that the overlap between successive lengths of wrapping in the helical direction is such that a part of the adhesive membrane of a length being applied overlies part of the substrate of the previously applied length.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 57 words
A method according to claim 1 or 2 characterised in that the last applied end of one length of the wrapping is directly bonded to part of the substrate of a previously applied length of the wrapping which it overlies by means of a patch of the substrate material being bonded to said end and said part.
Claim 5
Independent Claim 67 words
A method of applying a wrapping comprising a substrate and a membrane of a self-adhesive compound onto an article such as a pipeline by applying a length of the wrapping around the article under tension, characterised in that the substrate of the last applied part of the wrapping is directly bonded to the substrate of a previously applied part of that or an earlier length of wrapping.
Claim 6
Independent Claim 67 words
A method of applying a wrapping comprising a substrate and a membrane of a self-adhesive compound onto an article such as a pipeline by applying a length of the wrapping around the article under tension, characterised in that the substrate of the last applied part of the wrapping is directly bonded to the substrate of a previously applied part of that or an earlier length of wrapping.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 32 words
A method according to claim 4 characterised in that the wrapping is wound spirally upon itself so that each turn or part turn after the first lies directly upon the preceding one.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 30 words
A method according to claim 4 characterised in that there is a second layer of wrapping wound over a first layer and attached to said first layer at both ends.
Claim 9
Independent Claim 19 words
A method according to any one of claims 1 to 6, characterised in that the bonding is heat bonding.
Claim 10
Independent Claim 20 words
A method according to any one of claims 1 to 6, characterised in that the bonding is by solvent welding.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 19 words
A method according to claim 8 characterised in that the solvent is applied by an aerosol or compressible tube.
Claim 12
Independent Claim 21 words
A method according to any one of claims 1 to 6, characterised in that the bonding is by high frequency welding.
Claim 13
Independent Claim 22 words
A method according to any one of claims 1 to 6, characterised in that the bonding is by means of an adhesive.
Claim 14
Independent Claim 20 words
A method according to any one of claims 1 to 6, characterised in that the bonding is by ultrasonic welding.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim 69 words
A protective wrapping for application to an elongate article such as a pipe comprising a substrate and a membrane of a self-adhesive compound to contact and adhere to the pipe, characterised in that the membrane extends throughout the length of the substrate except at or near the leading edge thereof where the substrate is free to be directly bonded to the substrate of a previously applied length of wrapping.
Claim 16
Dependent Claim 69 words
A protective wrapping for application to an elongate article such as a pipe comprising a substrate and a membrane of a self-adhesive compound to contact and adhere to the pipe, characterised in that the membrane extends throughout the length of the substrate except at or near the leading edge thereof where the substrate is free to be directly bonded to the substrate of a previously applied length of wrapping.
Claim 17
Dependent Claim 72 words
A protective wrapping for application to an article such as a pipe comprising a substrate and a membrane of a self-adhesive compound to contact and adhere to the article, characterised in that the membrane extends throughout the length of the substrate except at or near the trailing end, and optionally the leading end, thereof, whereby the substrate is free to be directly bonded to the substrate of an underlying lap of wrapping.
Claim 18
Dependent Claim 72 words
A protective wrapping for application to an article such as a pipe comprising a substrate and a membrane of a self-adhesive compound to contact and adhere to the article, characterised in that the membrane extends throughout the length of the substrate except at or near the trailing end, and optionally the leading end, thereof, whereby the substrate is free to be directly bonded to the substrate of an underlying lap of wrapping.
Claim 19
Dependent Claim 28 words
A protective wrapping according to claim 14 characterised by an additional area to which the membrane does not extend at or near the leading end of the substrate.
