Abstract

Abstract A radially self-expanding implantable intraluminal device formed from a hollow tubular braid. The intraluminal device may be used in a variety of medical procedures which require a passageway to be maintained in an open position or which require reinforcement, support or a bypass conduit such as in blood vessels weakened by disease. The intraluminal device is longitudinally expanded or radially collapsed for ease of insertion into a lumen and upon alignment within the lumen, the intraluminal device radially self-expands to come into intimate contact with the inner surface of the lumen.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 16
Claim 1
Independent Claim 53 words
A method of making an intraluminal device, comprising the steps of: subjecting a hollow tubular thermoplastic braid in a radially expanded position to conditions of time and temperature sufficient to set the thermoplastic material in the radially expanded position; cooling the braid in the radially expanded position to form a radially self-expanding device.
Claim 2
Independent Claim 53 words
A method of making an intraluminal device, comprising the steps of: subjecting a hollow tubular thermoplastic braid in a radially expanded position to conditions of time and temperature sufficient to set the thermoplastic material in the radially expanded position; cooling the braid in the radially expanded position to form a radially self-expanding device.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 26 words
A method as described in claim 1 , wherein the thermoplastic braid is maintained in the radially expanded position on a mandrel during heating and cooling.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 22 words
A method as described in claim 2 , wherein the mandrel is tapered or shaped to produce a tapered or shaped device.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 13 words
A method as described in claim 2 , wherein the mandrel is heated.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 24 words
A method as described in claim 1 , wherein the thermoplastic is selected from the group consisting of polyester, polypropylene, polyethylene, polyurethane, and polytetrafluoroethylene.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 35 words
A method as described in claim 5 , wherein the thermoplastic braid is heated at a temperature of 200° F. to about 700° F. for a time period of 5 minutes to about 30 minutes.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 13 words
A method as described in claim 6 , wherein the thermoplastic comprises polyester.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 45 words
A method as described in claim 1 , further comprising the step of providing a heat source for heating said braid, wherein the heat source is selected from the group consisting of a convection oven, an infra red light source, and a hot liquid medium.
Claim 10
Independent Claim 57 words
A method of making a metallic radially self-expanding implantable intraluminal device, comprising the steps of: forming a braid from a metallic wire on a mandrel to a diameter representing its fully expanded diameter; annealing the braid with heat for a time and temperature sufficient to set the braid into the expanded configuration; allowing the braid to cool.
Claim 11
Independent Claim 57 words
A method of making a metallic radially self-expanding implantable intraluminal device, comprising the steps of: forming a braid from a metallic wire on a mandrel to a diameter representing its fully expanded diameter; annealing the braid with heat for a time and temperature sufficient to set the braid into the expanded configuration; allowing the braid to cool.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 18 words
The method of claim 9 , wherein the metallic wire comprises stainless steel, titanium and a nickel-chromium alloy.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 121 words
A tubular prosthesis for intraluminal implantation in a vessel comprising: a three dimensional braided fabric having at least two sets of yarns spiraling in opposing directions about a longitudinal axis at an angle with respect to said axis, and wherein said yarns spiraling in opposing directions can scissor through a range of angles in response to a radial force supplied thereto whereby the length of said prosthesis decreases as its diameter increases; and a stent affixed to each end of said prosthesis for securing said prosthesis to said vessel, and wherein each of said stents is expandably affixed to said prosthesis whereby substantially simultaneous expansion of both said prosthesis and said stents occurs when said prosthesis is intraluminally expanded following implantation.
Claim 14
Claim 15
Dependent Claim 29 words
The prosthesis according to claim 11 , wherein said prosthesis is radially self-expanding whereby said prosthesis radially expands to substantially conform with the diameter of said vessel following implantation.
Claim 16
Dependent Claim 22 words
The prosthesis according to claim 11 wherein each of said stents is affixed to said prosthesis by one of hooks and sutures.
