Abstract

Abstract A delta-modulated magnitude amplifier is used to amplify the magnitude component of an RF power amplifier that employs envelope elimination and restoration. The delta-modulated amplifier introduces a smaller amount of non-linearity than traditional approaches, which are based upon pulse-width modulation. The disclosed technique can be implemented using switched-capacitor circuits in a standard MOS technology with only two external components, i.e., an inductor and a capacitor. Thus, the disclosed technique allows the implementation of an efficient and yet linear RF power amplifier using low-cost MOS technology.

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim 106 words
A delta-modulated power supply, comprising: a difference detector for generating an output that depends on the difference between an input voltage and a feedback signal; a feedback path for coupling a power supply output voltage to said difference detector as said feedback signal; a quantizer coupled to said difference detector for generating a digital bit stream in which each bit is in one of two states depending on whether the output of said difference detector is greater than or less than a threshold level; and a non-linear amplifier coupled to said quantizer for current amplifying said digital bit stream to produce said power supply output voltage.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 106 words
