Independent Claim
178 words
A method of making a mechanical prosthetic heart valve, said method comprising steps of: providing a base portion defining a blood flow pathway therethrough; providing a pair of fluid pressure responsive valve leaflets; providing each one of said pair of valve leaflets with a projection from the leaflet toward an adjacent leaflet; disposing said pair of valve leaflets in said blood flow pathway so that said projections of adjacent leaflets confront one another, and pivoting said pair of leaflets in response to blood fluid pressure between a first position of sealing cooperation both with one another and with said base portion to occlude blood flow in said pathway, and a fully open second position in which said leaflets open blood flow through said pathway; providing a pair of magnetic masses carried one on each one of said pair of valve leaflets at said projection; and attracting said pair of magnetic masses to one another to yieldably bias said pair of valve leaflets pivotally to a dynamically stable third pivotal position intermediate of said first and said second positions.
