Abstract

Abstract Methods and compositions for the prevention of imminent ventricular fibrillation are disclosed. The composition comprises eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), or a mixture of EPA and DHA. The composition may be administered by intravenous infusion, intracardial injection or both in a patient who presents symptoms of a condition, such as myocardial infarction, which may immediately lead to ventricular fibrillation.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 18
Claim 1
Independent Claim 43 words
A method for preventing imminent ventricular fibrillation, said method comprising the steps of: identifying a patient at risk of imminent ventricular fibrillation; and infusing intravenously into said patient a composition comprising eicosapentaenoic acid, in an amount being sufficient to prevent imminent ventricular fibrillation.
Claim 2
Independent Claim 43 words
A method for preventing imminent ventricular fibrillation, said method comprising the steps of: identifying a patient at risk of imminent ventricular fibrillation; and infusing intravenously into said patient a composition comprising eicosapentaenoic acid, in an amount being sufficient to prevent imminent ventricular fibrillation.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 19 words
The method of claim 1, wherein said patient at risk of imminent ventricular fibrillation has had a myocardial infarction.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 20 words
The method of claim 1, wherein said infusing is carried out within three hours of the onset of myocardial infarction.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 16 words
The method of claim 1, wherein said composition comprises at least 5% by volume eicosapentaenoic acid.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 25 words
The method of claim 1, further comprising, prior to the step of infusing said composition, the step of injecting said composition intracardially into said patient.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 19 words
The method of claim 5, wherein said patient at risk of imminent ventricular fibrillation has had a myocardial infarction.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 16 words
The method of claim 5, wherein said composition comprises at least 5% by volume eicosapentaenoic acid.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 16 words
The method of claim 1, wherein said patient is at risk of imminent secondary ventricular fibrillation.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 17 words
The method of claim 1, wherein said eicosapentaneoic acid is in the form of a free acid.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 16 words
The method of claim 1, wherein said eicosapentaneoic acid is in the form of a salt.
Claim 12
Independent Claim 43 words
A method for preventing imminent ventricular fibrillation, said method comprising the steps of: identifying a patient at risk of imminent ventricular fibrillation; and injecting intracardially into said patient a composition comprising eicosapentaenoic acid, in an amount being sufficient to prevent imminent ventricular fibrillation.
Claim 13
Independent Claim 43 words
A method for preventing imminent ventricular fibrillation, said method comprising the steps of: identifying a patient at risk of imminent ventricular fibrillation; and injecting intracardially into said patient a composition comprising eicosapentaenoic acid, in an amount being sufficient to prevent imminent ventricular fibrillation.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 19 words
The method of claim 11, wherein said patient at risk of imminent ventricular fibrillation has had a myocardial infarction.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim 20 words
The method of claim 11, wherein said injecting is carried out within three hours of the onset of myocardial infarction.
Claim 16
Dependent Claim 16 words
The method of claim 11, wherein said patient is at risk of imminent secondary ventricular fibrillation.
Claim 17
Dependent Claim 17 words
The method of claim 11, wherein said eicosapentaneoic acid is in the form of a free acid.
Claim 18
Dependent Claim 16 words
The method of claim 11, wherein said eicosapentaneoic acid is in the form of a salt.
