Abstract

Abstract An automated, computer-controlled system automatically measures various parameters associated with the transmitter and/or receiver of an electro-optic module. Measured transmitter parameters include transmitter average power, transmitter rise/fall time, transmitter extinction ratio, transmitter duty cycle distortion, and transmitter data dependent jitter. Measured receiver parameters include receiver sensitivity, receiver pulse width distortion, receiver signal detect threshold, and receiver signal detect assert/deassert times.

Claim 1
Independent Claim 165 words
A method for testing an electro-optic module having an electro-optic transmitter, comprising the steps of: providing an automated test system that receives electro-optic modules for test; and initiating a test sequence of the automated test system that performs the steps of providing a pseudo-random pattern of data signals to the electro-optic module, defining a reference average power level of an optical power meter that receives a pseudo-random optical pattern generated by the electro-optic module in response to the data signals, receiving an indication of the average optical power produced by the electro-optic module in response to the pseudo-random pattern, wherein the electro-optic transmitter produces a digital optical signal such that transmitter average power is defined as the average value of the optical output power generated by the electro-optic transmitter as it switches between a relatively high optical output power and a relatively low optical output power, and providing a "passed" indication if the electro-optic module produced average power within a predetermined range of acceptable power.

Claim 3
Independent Claim 165 words
A method for measuring the average transmitter power of an electro-optic module having an electro-optic transmitter, comprising the steps of: providing an automated test system that receives electro-optic modules for test; and responding to a test initiation command for measurement of a received electro-optic module having an electro-optic transmitter by automatically: setting a supply voltage of the received electro-optic module; generating a pseudo-random pattern of data signals and providing them to the electro-optic module, thereby causing a corresponding pseudo-random digital optical signal to be generated by the transmitter of the electro-optic module; setting a reference average power level of an optical power meter that receives the pseudo-random digital optical signal from the electro-optic module; receiving a measure of the average power of the pseudo-random digital optical signal produced by the electro-optic module in response to the pseudo-random pattern; and providing a "passed" indication if the received average power measure of the electro-optic module produced digital optical signal was within a predetermined range of acceptable power.
