Abstract

Abstract An intraocular light probe has a slit-shaped mask or cannula affixed at a distal end thereof which forms a slit-shaped light beam for intraocular slit-illumination of target features within the eye. A hood at a distal tip portion directs light in a particular direction. A distal flange retains the instrument within the eye. In a second embodiment, a light probe for intraocular application of a slit-shaped light beam is created by forming a slit shape at a distal end of an optical fiber bundle. A third embodiment provides a surgical instrument, such as a phacoemulsifier or vitrector, having an infusion sleeve which incorporates a slit illuminator for intraocular application of a slit-shaped light beam to target tissues. The device of the invention is preferably introduced into the eye via the primary or side-port incision to provide intraocular cross-lighting of tissues during surgical procedures such as cataract extraction, vitrectomy, intraocular lens implantation, refractive surgery, and glaucoma surgery.

Claim 1
Independent Claim 94 words
A surgical illumination system for providing illumination of intraocular target structures within an eye during surgical procedures for diagnosis or treatment of ocular conditions, comprising: an intraocular instrument having a distal end capable of insertion into the eye, said intraocular instrument further comprising: a light-conducting means for transmitting a light beam; a means for forming said light beam into a slit-shaped beam, said slit-shaped beam being emitted from said distal end of said instrument when said instrument is inserted into the eye whereby intraocular slit-beam illumination of target structures is provided within the eye.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 94 words
A surgical illumination system for providing illumination of intraocular target structures within an eye during surgical procedures for diagnosis or treatment of ocular conditions, comprising: an intraocular instrument having a distal end capable of insertion into the eye, said intraocular instrument further comprising: a light-conducting means for transmitting a light beam; a means for forming said light beam into a slit-shaped beam, said slit-shaped beam being emitted from said distal end of said instrument when said instrument is inserted into the eye whereby intraocular slit-beam illumination of target structures is provided within the eye.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 14 words
The device according to claim 1, wherein said means for forming comprises a mask.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 12 words

Claim 5
Dependent Claim 16 words
The device according to claim 1, wherein said means for forming comprises a cylindrical focusing lens.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 28 words
The device according to claim 1, wherein said means for forming comprises a bundle of optical fibers having a slit shape at a distal end of said bundle.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 25 words
The device according to claim 1, wherein said means for forming further comprises: a hood for deflecting said slit-shaped light beam in a desired direction.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 28 words
The device according to claim 1, wherein said means for forming further comprises: a flange for aiding in self-retaining a distal portion of said instrument within the eye.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 76 words
An intraocular surgical instrument capable of providing illumination of intraocular target structures within an eye during surgical procedures for diagnosis or treatment of ocular conditions, comprising: a distal tip portion capable of insertion into the eye; a slit-illuminator operatively connected to said distal tip portion for producing a slit-shaped beam, said slit-shaped beam being emitted from said instrument when said instrument is inserted into the eye for intraocular slit-beam illumination of target structures within the eye.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 76 words
An intraocular surgical instrument capable of providing illumination of intraocular target structures within an eye during surgical procedures for diagnosis or treatment of ocular conditions, comprising: a distal tip portion capable of insertion into the eye; a slit-illuminator operatively connected to said distal tip portion for producing a slit-shaped beam, said slit-shaped beam being emitted from said instrument when said instrument is inserted into the eye for intraocular slit-beam illumination of target structures within the eye.
Claim 11
Independent Claim 59 words
A method of illuminating intraocular target structures within an eye during surgical procedures for diagnosis or treatment of ocular conditions, said method comprising the steps of: creating a primary incision in an outer periphery of said eye; inserting a slit-beam illumination means through said primary incision so as to provide intraocular slit-beam illumination of target structures within said eye.
Claim 12
Independent Claim 59 words
A method of illuminating intraocular target structures within an eye during surgical procedures for diagnosis or treatment of ocular conditions, said method comprising the steps of: creating a primary incision in an outer periphery of said eye; inserting a slit-beam illumination means through said primary incision so as to provide intraocular slit-beam illumination of target structures within said eye.
