Abstract

Abstract A volumetric pump for administering intravenous fluids to a patient comprises a housing having an elongate cavity therein with an open and a closed end. A resilient sheet of material having a centrally-located aperture covers the open end, and a pump shaft is slidably disposed through the aperture to form a sphincter seal therebetween. An inlet conduit leading from a fluid source (an IV bag) passes through the housing into the cavity near the open end thereof, and an outlet conduit leading to a fluid sink (the patient) passes through the housing from the cavity near the closed end thereof. The shaft is driven back and forth in reciprocating motion inwardly and outwardly of the cavity to produce, respectively, a positive pressure forcing fluid out of the outlet conduit to the fluid sink, and a negative pressure forcing fluid from the fluid source through the inlet conduit.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 4
Claim 1
Independent Claim 244 words
A fluid control valve comprising: a housing having a cavity with interior walls, a fluid inlet, a first fluid outlet, and an opening on one side, first and second resilient sheets of material disposed in the cavity of the housing, the sheets having perimeters attached to the interior walls of the cavity, the sheets extending inwardly from the interior walls of the cavity to divide the cavity into first and second compartments, one of said compartments being disposed between the first and second resilient sheets, with the fluid inlet positioned to allow the flow of fluid into the first compartment, and the fluid outlet positioned to allow the flow of fluid out of the second compartment, said first sheet of material having a control opening therein to allow fluid to flow therethrough from the first compartment to the second compartment when the control opening is not plugged, said second resilient sheet of material disposed over the opening in the housing and having a shaft receiving opening therein, a control shaft fitted to move in the shaft receiving opening between a stop position, in which the shaft is moved into the control opening of the first sheet of material to prevent the flow of fluid therethrough, and an open position, in which the shaft is moved out of the control opening to allow the flow of fluid therethrough, and control means for selectively moving the control shaft between the stop position and the open position.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 244 words
Claim 3
