Abstract

Abstract A device for remote sensing utilizing fiber optic techniques is presented. This device makes use of multi-mode optic fibers in conjunction with light polarized in multiple directions. The device presents a platform which is insensitive to phenomena outside of the remote sensing region while capable of detecting and analyzing multiple phenomena within the sensing region. The device is also capable of inspecting multiple remote sensing regions simultaneously.

Independent Claim 184 words
A multiple parameter remote fiber optic sensing device comprising: (a) a first length of optical fiber, which is polarization preserving and single mode, having a first and a second end; (b) a light source proximate to the first end of said first length of optical fiber and aligned with said first length of optical fiber such that light is injected into said first length of optical fiber along both polarization axes; (c) a second gauged length of optical fiber, which is polarization preserving and two mode, having a first and a second end, the first end of said second length of optical fiber connected to the second end of said first length of optical fiber; (d) a third length of optical fiber, which is polarization preserving and single mode, having a first and a second end, the first end of said third length of optical fiber connected to the second end of said second length of optical fiber such that the polarization axes of the two fibers are aligned; and (e) means for detecting light exiting said second end of third length of fiber.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 184 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 51 words
The device of claim 1, further comprising: means for splitting light, located in appropriate spaced relation to the second end of said third length of optical fiber, wherein said splitting means is aligned with said third length of optical fiber such that the light is separated into its linear polarization states.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 51 words
The device of claim 2 where said detector means comprises: a first optical detection device located in appropriate spaced relation to said splitting means to detect a first polarized light; and a second optical detection device located in appropriate spaced relation to said splitting means to detect a second polarized light.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 15 words
The device of claim 2, wherein said light splitting means comprises a polarizing beam splitter.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 16 words
The device of claim 2, wherein said light splitting means comprises a polarizing fiber optic coupler.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 31 words
A remote sensing device of claim 2 wherein said first optical fiber and said second gauged optical fiber are connected such that the polarization axes of the two fibers are aligned.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 34 words
The device of claim 1, further comprising: a means for extracting light reflected from the second end of said second gauged length of optical fiber such that each polarized light component is kept separate.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 15 words
