Abstract

Abstract An acetabular cup assembly having a non-metallic inner cup to be positioned within a metal shell with a dome shaped interior surface. The non-metallic inner cup is formed with a plurality of interconnecting grooves and ribs. The ribs are configured to contact the interior surface of the metal shell while the grooves have inner surface areas spaced from the interior surface of the metal shell. The combination of the ribs and the groove define cavitites in the outer surface of the inner cup. The assembly further includes groove insert members that are configured to be positioned in and filling substantially all of the cavities.
