Abstract

Abstract The invention provides a method and apparatus for transmitting digital signal information to a receiver using a plurality of antennas. The invention involves applying a channel code to a digital signal producing one or more symbols. A plurality of symbol copies is made and each copy is weighted by a distinct time varying function. Each antenna transmits a signal based on one of the weighted symbol copies. Any channel code may be used with the invention, such as a convolutional channel code or block channel code. Weighting provided to symbol copies may involve application of an amplitude gain, phase shift, or both. The present invention may be used in combination with either or both conventional interleavers and constellation mappers.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim 114 words
A method of transmitting digital signal information to a receiver with use of at least two antennas, each antenna corresponding to a communication channel, the method comprising the steps of: 1. applying a channel code to a digital signal to form a sequence of first symbols; 2. forming a sequence of second symbols based on the sequence of first symbols and a first time-varying function, said time-varying function simulating a relative variation between a. a set of one or more frequency response characteristics of a first communication channel corresponding to a first antenna, and b. a set of one or more frequency response characteristics of a second communication channel corresponding to a second antenna;
Claim 2
Independent Claim 114 words
A method of transmitting digital signal information to a receiver with use of at least two antennas, each antenna corresponding to a communication channel, the method comprising the steps of: 1. applying a channel code to a digital signal to form a sequence of first symbols; 2. forming a sequence of second symbols based on the sequence of first symbols and a first time-varying function, said time-varying function simulating a relative variation between a. a set of one or more frequency response characteristics of a first communication channel corresponding to a first antenna, and b. a set of one or more frequency response characteristics of a second communication channel corresponding to a second antenna;
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 40 words
transmitting a first signal with the first antenna, the first signal generated based on said sequence of second symbols; and 4. transmitting a second signal with the second antenna, the second signal generated based on the sequence of first symbols.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 40 words
transmitting a first signal with the first antenna, the first signal generated based on said sequence of second symbols; and 4. transmitting a second signal with the second antenna, the second signal generated based on the sequence of first symbols.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 21 words
The method of claim 1 wherein the step of applying a channel code comprises the step of applying a convolutional code.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 21 words
The method of claim 1 wherein the step of applying a channel code comprises the step of applying a block code.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 17 words
The method of claim 1 wherein the time-varying function provides an amplitude gain to a first symbol.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 16 words
The method of claim 1 wherein the time-varying function provides a phase-shift to a first symbol.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 21 words
The method of claim 5 wherein the phase-shift applied to a first symbol is based on a transmitted symbol data rate.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 22 words
The method of claim 1 wherein portions of said first and second signals representing a given first symbol are transmitted substantially simultaneously.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 30 words
The method of claim 1 wherein the second signal is generated further based on a second time-varying function, and wherein the first and second time-varying functions are not identical functions.
