Abstract

Abstract An intercooler apparatus (C) for a supercharged internal combustion engine comprises a heat exchanger (19) through which charged air for combustion passes prior to entry into a combustion chamber (17) of the engine. A refrigeration unit (20) provides the heat exchanger (19) with coolant comprising air cooled to a temperature below ambient temperature which removes heat from the charged air.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 14
Claim 1
Independent Claim 68 words
An intercooler apparatus for a supercharged internal combustion engine having a combustion chamber, comprises a heat exchanger, means to pass charged air for combustion through the heat exchanger, prior to entry into the combustion chamber of the engine, and means to provide to the heat exchanger coolant wherein the coolant comprises air cooled to a temperature below ambient temperature which cooled air removes heat from the charged air.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 68 words
An intercooler apparatus for a supercharged internal combustion engine having a combustion chamber, comprises a heat exchanger, means to pass charged air for combustion through the heat exchanger, prior to entry into the combustion chamber of the engine, and means to provide to the heat exchanger coolant wherein the coolant comprises air cooled to a temperature below ambient temperature which cooled air removes heat from the charged air.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 16 words
An apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the cooled air is cooled by a refrigeration unit.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 15 words
An apparatus according to claim 2 wherein the refrigeration unit is driven from the engine.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 16 words
An apparatus according to claim 2 wherein the refrigeration unit is operable otherwise to provide cooling.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 31 words
An apparatus according to claim 4 wherein the internal combustion engine is controlled from an operator's cab and the refrigation unit is operable to provide cooled air for the operator's cab.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 31 words
An apparatus according to claim 5 wherein the cooled air for the intercooler apparatus is bled from an air feed between the refrigeration unit and the operator's cab or vice versa.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 38 words
An apparatus according to claim 5 wherein the refrigeration unit has a first cooled air outlet connected to the operator's cab and a second cooled air outlet which is connected to the heat exchanger of the intercooler apparatus.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 37 words
An apparatus according to claim 5 wherein a control means is provided which is capable of providing for at least a proportion of the air cooled by the refrigeration unit to be fed to the intercooler appparatus.
Claim 10
Independent Claim 87 words
A system comprising an internal combustion engine having a combustion chamber, a supercharger for charging combustion air for the internal combustion engine, and an intercooler apparatus, the intercooler apparatus comprising a heat exchanger and means to pass charged air for combustion through the heat exchanger prior to entry into the combustion chamber of the engine wherein there is provided a refrigeration unit for providing to the heat exchanger of the intercooler apparatus air at a temperature below ambient temperature, thereby to remove heat from the charged air.
Claim 11
Independent Claim 87 words
A system comprising an internal combustion engine having a combustion chamber, a supercharger for charging combustion air for the internal combustion engine, and an intercooler apparatus, the intercooler apparatus comprising a heat exchanger and means to pass charged air for combustion through the heat exchanger prior to entry into the combustion chamber of the engine wherein there is provided a refrigeration unit for providing to the heat exchanger of the intercooler apparatus air at a temperature below ambient temperature, thereby to remove heat from the charged air.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 30 words
A system according to claim 9 which comprises part of an excavating and/or loading machine wherein the engine is operable to provide power for digging and/or loading and/or lifting operations.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 23 words
A system according to claim 10 which comprises part of a vehicle and a machine, having ground-engaging drive means driven from the engine.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 28 words
An apparatus according to claim 5 wherein the cooled air for the operator's cab is bled from an air feed between the refrigeration unit and the intercooler apparatus.
