Abstract

Abstract A composite article useful as a material of construction made of a plurality of substantially aligned, individual pieces of corrugated cardboard cut from scrap corrugated boxes or sheets. The corrugated pieces lie in a shingle-like configuration, a bridge-like configuration, or a combination thereof and form multiple, generally planar layers of individual corrugated cardboard pieces having a length only a fraction of the full length of the article. The material of construction is particularly useful in making shipping pallets to replace wood pallets currently in use.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 12
Claim 1
Independent Claim 95 words
A composite article useful as a material of construction comprising a plurality of substantially aligned, individual pieces of corrugated cardboard cut from scarp corrugated boxes or sheets, said pieces being disposed and adhered with respect to one another such that they lie in a shingle-shaped configuration, a configuration of unconnected pieces being adjoined by a piece deposited on top thereof and spanning said unconnected pieces, or a combination thereof, and forming multiple, generally planar layers comprised of said individual corrugated cardboard pieces having a length only a fraction of the full length of the article.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 95 words
A composite article useful as a material of construction comprising a plurality of substantially aligned, individual pieces of corrugated cardboard cut from scarp corrugated boxes or sheets, said pieces being disposed and adhered with respect to one another such that they lie in a shingle-shaped configuration, a configuration of unconnected pieces being adjoined by a piece deposited on top thereof and spanning said unconnected pieces, or a combination thereof, and forming multiple, generally planar layers comprised of said individual corrugated cardboard pieces having a length only a fraction of the full length of the article.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 22 words
The composite article of claim 1 wherein at least about 60% of the individual pieces are of substantially uniform size and shape.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 24 words
The composite article of claim 1 wherein the individual pieces are square in shape and have flutes extending generally perpendicular to the edges thereof.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 16 words
The composite article of claim 3 wherein said flutes are generally aligned in a single direction.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 25 words
The composite article of claim 1 wherein in each planar layer the individual pieces lie in a shingle-shaped configuration overlapping adjacent pieces by about two-thirds.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 112 words
A shipping pallet comprising: a planar support panel having opposed planar faces and comprising a plurality of substantially aligned, individual pieces of corrugated cardboard cut from scrap corrugated boxes or sheets, said pieces being disposed and adhered with respect to one another such that they lie in a shingle-shaped configuration, a configuration of unconnected pieces being adjoined by a piece deposited on top thereof and spanning said unconnected pieces, or a combination thereof, and forming multiple, generally planar layers comprised of said individual corrugated cardboard pieces having a length only a fraction of the full length of the article, a plurality of supports attached to one side of said planar support panel.
Claim 8
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 113 words
The shipping pallet of claim 6 wherein said supports comprise a plurality of support beams attached to one side of said planar support panel, said support beams comprising a plurality of substantially aligned, individual pieces of corrugated cardboard cut from scrap corrugated boxes or sheets, said pieces being disposed and adhered with respect to one another such that they lie in a shingle-shaped configuration, a configuration of unconnected pieces being adjoined by a piece deposited on top thereof and spanning said unconnected pieces, or a combination thereof, and forming multiple, generally planar layers comprised of said individual corrugated cardboard pieces having a length only a fraction of the full length of said beams.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 20 words
The shipping pallet of claim 6 further comprising facing sheets of paper adhered to and covering said opposed planar faces.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 28 words
The shipping pallet of claim 8 wherein said supports comprise support beams which are adhered to one of said facing sheets coveting one of said opposed planar faces.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 28 words
The shipping pallet of claim 6 wherein the flutes of said individual pieces of corrugated cardboard are substantially aligned in a direction perpendicular to said opposed planar faces.
