Abstract

Abstract A single or multi-stage process for providing compatible thermoplastic blends of polyphenylene ether resins and polyamide resins is provided by combining such resins with a compatiblizing amount of an agent having in its molecule both acyl-functionality as well as at least one of the following functional groups: carboxylic acid or acid anhydride, acid amide, imido, carboxylic acid ester, amino or hydroxyl group.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim 117 words
A process for providing compatible blends of a polyphenylene ether resin and a polyamide resin, comprising the steps of: a) melt-blending a polyphenylene ether resin and a polyamide resin with an effective compatibilizing amount of a compatibilizing compound which contains in its molecule both (i) at least one group having the formula ##STR7## wherein X is F, Cl, Br, I, OR, or ##STR8## wherein R is H or an alkyl or aryl radical; and (ii) at least one carboxylic acid, acid anhydride, acid amide, imido, carboxylic acid ester, amino, or hydroxyl group; and wherein groups (i) and (ii) are covalently bonded through an aryl linkage, and are not simultaneously a COOH group; and b) neutralizing the blend.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 117 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 31 words
The process of claim 1, wherein the blend is neutralized with a compound selected from the group consisting of ZnO, CaO, CaCO 3 , MgO, and Sb 2 O 3 .
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 28 words
The process of claim 1, wherein the compatibilizing compound is selected from the group consisting of trimellitic anhydride acid chloride, terephthalic acid acid chloride, and 1-acetoxyacetyl-3,4-dibenzoic acid anhydride.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 13 words
The process of claim 1, wherein the melt-blending is accomplished in an extruder.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 30 words
The process of claim 1, wherein the polyphenylene ether is prepared by the oxidative coupling of at least one corresponding monohydroxyaromatic compound selected from the group consisting of 2,6-xylenol; 2,3,6-mesitol.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 39 words
The process of claim 1, wherein the polyamide resin is selected from the group consisting of polyamide 6; polyamide 6,6; polyamide 11; polyamide 12; polyamide 6,3; polyamide 6,4; polyamide 6,10; polyamide 6,12; and mixtures of any of the foregoing.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 107 words
A process for providing compatible blends of a polyphenylene ether resin and a polyamide resin, comprising the steps of: (a) melt-blending a polyphenylene ether resin and a polyamide resin with an effective compatibilizing amount of a compatibilizing compound which contains in its molecule both (i) at least one group having the formula ##STR9## wherein X is F, Cl, Br, I, OR, or ##STR10## wherein R is H; (ii) at least one carboxylic acid, acid anhydride, acid amide, imido, amino, or hydroxyl group; and wherein groups (i) and (ii) are covalently bonded through an aryl linkage, and are not simultaneously a COOH group; and (b) neutralizing the blend.
