Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 13
Claim 1
Independent Claim 116 words
A surgical suture consisting essentially of a heterogeneous braid composed of a first and second set of continuous and discrete yarns in a sterilized, braided construction wherein at least one yarn from the first set is in direct intertwining contact with a yarn from the second set; and a) each yarn from the first set is composed of a plurality of filaments of a first fiber-forming material selected from the group consisting of PTFE, FEP, PFA, PVDF, PETFE, PP and PE; and b) each yarn from the second set is composed of a plurality of filaments of a second fiber-forming material selected from the group consisting of PET, nylon and aramid; and c) optionally a core.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 116 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 14 words
The surgical suture of claim 1 wherein the suture is attached to a needle.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 20 words
The surgical suture of claim 1 wherein the first fiber-forming material exhibits a surface energy less than about 38 dynes/cm.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 20 words
The surgical suture of claim 3 wherein the first fiber-forming material exhibits a surface energy less than about 30 dynes/cm.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 14 words
The surgical suture of claim 1 wherein the first set of yarns is PTFE.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 20 words
The surgical suture of claim 5 wherein the second set of yarns exhibits a yarn tenacity greater than 3.0 grams/denier.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 20 words
The surgical suture of claim 6 wherein the second set of yarns exhibits a yarn tenacity greater than 5.0 grams/denier.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 14 words
The surgical suture of claim 1 wherein the second set of yarns is PET.

Dependent Claim 30 words
The surgical suture of claim 8 wherein the volume fraction of the first set of yarns in the braided sheath and core ranges from about 20 to about 80 percent.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 26 words
The surgical suture of claim 9 wherein the fiber fineness of the yarns of the first and second sets is less than 10 denier per filament.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 29 words
The surgical suture of claim 1 wherein at least one yarn from the first set of yarns is plied together to a yarn from the second set of yarns.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 14 words
The surgical suture of claim 8 wherein the suture is attached to a needle.
